It’s April and Earth Day is around the corner! Woo! To celebrate we decided to pick 4 of our favorite documentaries for you to watch on Netflix. We know that after a long day at work, you’d like to slip under the covers and watch some mindless TV. We do too, BUT we promise that these documentaries are absolutely amazing and will make your brain have a little exercise. Earth Day this year is a little different. In previous years, we did not acknowledge it as we should, but with the current state of our planet, it’s time to give it a lot more attention.

Alright, let’s get to it!

1. Our Planet (2019)

Our Planet is causing everyone to shed a tear or two for mother earth. Our Planet is a British nature documentary series made for Netflix. David Attenborough is the narrator and takes us on a journey to uncover the magic in nature and the state of our planet. He uncovers that we may be the predator and how our actions in the next 20 years are crucial to determining the future for all life on Earth. This genius documentary has already led to 53% drop in single use plastic in the last 12 months.  It is having a positive impact on people’s behavior and is now referred to as the ‘Attenborough effect.” This is why it is number 1 on the list!

2. A Plastic Ocean (2016)

Not to scare you but this documentary was filmed in 2016, just imagine the state of our oceans now in 2019. When journalist and filmmaker Craig Leeson discovered the world’s oceans were filled with plastic, he decided to go on a mission to showcase the fragile state of our oceans. Alongside a team of scientists, researchers and free diver Tanya Streeter, Leeson worked for four years, across twenty locations, to uncover alarming truths on this issue, and to find solutions to help save our oceans. The most important bits and pieces of the four years were shared in A Plastic Ocean. It’s the truth we all need to hear to help change our plastic habits and to realize there are alternatives.

3. Chasing Coral (2017)

It is known that climate change is causing the world’s coral to disappear at unprecedented rates, but this documentary makes us realize the true demise of our beautiful reefs. Chasing Coral is an incredible underwater adventure to capture our changing oceans. This documentary will make you fall in love with the underwater world and make you conscious next time you decide to purchase sunscreens with chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate.

4. The True Cost (2015)

Andrew Morgan‘s The True Cost is the documentary we need to watch. The clothing industry and our consumption habits are not something we all think about as it is the norm in our society. This documentary exposes the global demand for low cost, fast fashion and the insane impact on workers in third world countries. It also shows the impact our consumption has on their communities and environments. The True Cost makes us realize how our everyday choices can have a greater impact than we believe.
